Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Administrator, the Director of Nursing directs the nursing operation of our Imperial Manor facility in El Centro, CA. Areas of responsibilities include nursing development, patient care and related administrative duties. May serve as Charge Nurse.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with Facility and Volunteers of America Policy and Procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for coordinating plans for the total care of each patient to comply with physician's orders, governmental regulations and facility policies.
  • Develops, maintains, and upgrades nursing service objectives, standards for nursing practice, nursing procedure manuals, and written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, hiring, orientation, training, corrective discipline and dismissal of nursing personnel.
  • Assigns duties and delegates responsibilities to nursing personnel according to their abilities and position held.
  • Evaluates performance of nursing personnel and maintains evaluation records.
  • Assists in budget planning for nursing service including recommendation for the number and type of nursing service equipment and supply needs.
  • Serves as discharge and planning nurse for patients.
  • Maintains contact with physicians as necessary according to patient needs, facility policies, and governmental regulations.
  • Coordinates nursing service with other patient care services provided such as physician, dietary, occupational and physical therapies, patient activities, social services and with the business office.
  • Assures that a nursing care plan is reviewed and modified as needed.
  • Evaluates information to be shared with outside nursing personnel and allied services for continuing of patient care.
  • Assess community resources, which may be utilized to improve patient care.
  • Serves on the QA Committee, Patient Care Policy Committee, Pharmacy Committee and Infection Control Committee.
  • Discusses with the Administrator, monthly, the current status of the nursing service including recommendations for needed changes and other items required by facility policy.
  • Encourages staff development and professional growth.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with patients and their families, nursing personnel, allied professional services, and the community.
  • Visits patients to ensure maximum care and to ascertain need for additional or modified services.
  • Assures adequate twenty-four (24) hour nursing coverage in the facility each day.
  • Attends Utilization Review Committee meetings.
  • Designates a responsible professional nurse to be in charge of the nursing service during the absence of the Director of Nursing Service.
  • Provides close supervision and direction to the Charge Nurse.
  • Promotes a safe environment within the facility which includes fire and accident prevention, maintenance of sanitary conditions and assurance that all nursing personnel understand their roles in the event of a disaster or other disruption of services.
  • Works cooperatively with Director of Staff Development to assure that an adequate orientation and In-Service Training Program is provided for all nursing personnel.
  • Makes out nursing schedule and posts at least two weeks prior to date.
  • Attends Department Head meetings as scheduled by the Administrator.
  • Ensures that licensed personnel maintain current CPR Certification, TB test results, and complete all mandatory training.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Administrator or Corporate management.

Physical Activities & Work Environment:

The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently lifts and or moves up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

This position performs tasks that may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All employees are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination series.

Required Credentials, Abilities, & Experience:

Must be currently licensed by the State of California as a Registered Nurse, having fully met all requirements for said license, with at least one (1) year of supervisory nursing experience in the last five (5) years, and:

  • Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply basic principles of nursing care and education.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing with residents, doctors, nurses, pharmacy and social workers.
  • Ability to operate independently under minimal supervision
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to follow professional ethics, confidentiality, and boundaries with clients as well as with staff
  • Must demonstrate competency for contract implementation, compliance and evaluations.
  • Must have ability to train and supervise staff to prepare sound and concise case histories, appraisal of client needs and assessment plans, written goal plans, reports and other requested documents.
  • Must have knowledge of and enforce Volunteers of America's safety, security and cleanliness practices.
  • Must have ability to train and oversee staff to assess conditions and causes of need for assistance of persons requesting emergency and/or disabled services.
  • Must acknowledge and adhere to all Volunteers of America's policies and procedures
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
  • Knowledge of MDS (3.0) is preferred.
