Job Opportunity:

Under the supervision of the Food Service Director. The Cook will prepare and serve assigned meals, to include hot/cold breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Daily soups and scratch cooking. The Cook will also maintain clean and sanitary conditions in the kitchen. The cook will assist in daily admin functions to include invoice entry.  The cook will assist in daily garden operations and maintenance.  Must possess a valid Food Handlers Permit, California Driver's License, and a CPR card is a plus.  The corporate kitchen operates 365 days a year.  The kitchen opens at 4am.  Must be available on holidays and weekends.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of institutional cooking or three (3)Years of other cooking experience.
  • Must have basic knowledge of health and safety regulations pertaining to food preparation.
  • Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals.
  • Available to work a majority of weekends and available for varied shifts.  
  • Must have a current and valid Food Handlers Card.  ServSafe preferred.
  • CPR/1st Aide 30 days of employment. CPR certified a plus.
  • Drivers License and insurance.
  • Must be free from formal probation/parole status.
  • Must have continuous sobriety if in recovery.
  • Must have a food handler's card and keep current.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to comprehend and implement instructions.
  • Must be free from communicable diseases.
  • Must obtain TB/Drug Test prior to employment.

      

Essential Duties:

  • Adhere to Volunteers of America Policy and Procedures.
  • Communicates with Director and/or client counselors on special needs diets and or menu alterations.
  • Assists in all food, supplies, receiving and checking inventory.  Help maintain FIFO within the department and adheres to label/dating procedures/policy.
  • Maintains inventory of all meals served for monthly reporting, including commodity reporting forms.
  • Completes preparation and service of food as shift requires.
  • Work with staff in a fair, firm and consistent manner and complete applicable training as required.
  • Accountable to make sure food for off-site delivery is prepared, temperature checked, labeled and dated accordingly and leaves and arrives on time to designated locations.
  • Assists with maintaining the kitchen and dining area cleanliness and sanitation requirements.
  • Ensures that proper disposal of trash, food related items, and boxes are taken out properly.
  • Maintains quality of food within budget limitations and department standards.
  • Performs other duties as required.
