The Marketing & Communications Specialist is a high-performing member of the Mission Advancement & Communications Department supporting the development and execution of strategic marketing communication activities for Volunteers of America Southwest. The Marketing & Communications Specialist leads the department's copy writing and content development, including program descriptions, marketing promotions, alumni stories, related topics and items of interest, for use in print and digital campaigns. Responsibilities also include collateral and website development, website and social media analytics, staff support of the Marketing and Branding Committee, support of Development Activities and Events, and support of programs.  Digital content will be used in web advertising, email and on social pages. Requires excellent writing and communication skills, a highly-organized and independent individual with a strong ability to prioritize and multi-task and 2-3 years of experience working on marketing campaigns. Excellent project management and interpersonal skills are key.


Reporting to the Director of Mission Advancement & Communications, The Marketing & Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the marketing communications activities for a regional marketing campaign designed to increase brand awareness of Volunteers of America Southwest and drive donor interest and engagement.


required credentials, abilities and experience:

  • 3 years of related marketing experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Excellent writing and proof reading skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Firm grasp of Microsoft Office specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to foster relationships with multiple internal and external constituencies, and experience working within a marketing environment.
  • Experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Photo Shop and Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
  • Experience in nonprofit enterprise a plus.
  • Experience with online marketing tools including Google Analytics.



  • Content Development: Responsible for creating and transforming program concepts into compelling marketing copy for print and digital communications including direct mail, press releases, newsletters, flyers, email, and social media. Interview alumni to develop testimonials and alumni stories. Web and social content should be developed using best practices for SEO, length, and frequency.
  • Copy editing: Proofread and edit a range of marketing communications content including brochures, emails, and letters. 
  • Social Media: direct responsibility for content and placement of posting.
  • Direct Mail: collateral production; tracking response rates.
  • Marketing Collateral: Develop program collateral pieces, ranging from brochures to overview sheets. Work with internal and external stakeholders including program directors, marketing agency, development staff and external vendors.
  • Reporting & Tracking: Prepare a variety of department reports including analysis of direct mail performance, web and social post performance, and monthly summaries of all program-specific marketing activity. 
  • Inventory Management: Responsible for managing the collateral inventory for items kept in-house and at vendor locations. Order new inventory as needed.
  • Brand standards: Works closely on development and enforcement of quality and standards protocols; ensures compliance with standard use guidelines for Volunteers of America Southwest branding. Works with all staff members tasked with representing Volunteers of America Southwest externally to ensure that the presentation of the Volunteers of America Southwest brand and programs represent Volunteers of America Southwest standards.
  • Website migration and development: lead the migration and local development efforts for migration off national platform to local platform; establish and maintain content for Southwest Affiliate. Coordinate with Development department migration and implementation of new CRM platform and facilitate all integrations.
  • Plan and develop news releases, media kits for the organization for news conferences. Upon approval from the Director will distribute news releases through appropriate channels.
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop Volunteers of America Southwest's Annual Report.
  • Provide or coordinate in-house photography and videography services for the organization and program needs.
  • Route all requests for design services, project assistance and office coverage through the Director for approval.
  • Serve as primary contact for media inquiries, manage external PR firm and manage in house PR.
  • Oversee interns or assistants supporting PR and/ or marketing related activities.
  • Participates in the planning and execution of special events, PR events, donor events, and volunteer events.
