CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the Director of Mission Advancement and Communications, the Development Associate supports the organization's effort to obtain philanthropic support to achieve its strategic goals including annual and major giving, special events and business engagement. Works with board, staff and volunteers at all levels to achieve these goals.

 

REQUIRED CREDENTIALS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Fundraising Experience: 2-4 years in nonprofit fundraising, events and/or marketing. Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage new donor accounts. Experience in coordinating special events. Experience with databases is required; experience with donor management software is preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Writing skills: Strong writing and editing skills is required. Experience working with graphic designers, printers and mail houses is preferred.
  • Team Skills: Ability to make independent, well-reasoned decisions in the best interests of the organization for the present and future. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of individuals. Excellent meeting facilitation skills. Holds oneself accountable to assigned responsibilities and goals.
  • Communications Skills: Superior interpersonal, relationship-building, verbal and written communications skills. High energy, positive, "can-do" attitude, flexibility, and ability to facilitate teamwork.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and adjust to multiple demands. Strong project management skills and demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes and a results-oriented culture. Ability to plan and adhere to budgets. Understanding of financial management in a nonprofit setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordination of Development activities: Coordinates and facilitates the efforts of the Director of Mission Advancement & Communications, Board Directors, other staff members and volunteers in order to accomplish fundraising goals. Provides staff support to the Fundraising Committee, Golf Committee and Auxiliary Volunteers Committees, and compiles reports on progress on agreed upon goals for the Director of Mission Advancement and Communications.
  • Individual Giving Programs: Manages all giving programs raising unrestricted and restricted gifts. Develops and implements a portfolio of giving options including through newsletter and annual appeals, recurring gifts, memorials and tributes, online giving, and third-party vehicles, etc. Reviews donor records to identify donors to be approached to increase their giving levels and develop donor specific strategies for each request.
  • Donor Outreach Coordination: Coordinates and supports the efforts of board members, management, and Ambassadors for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship processes of current and potential donors.
  • Develops individual donor strategy with input from other solicitors as needed. Works with board members, management, and donors to identify potential donors and then develop tailored outreach strategies. Writes personalized donor correspondence.
  • Events: Develops and implements plans for established fundraising strategies for all aspect of events including theme, ambiance, revenue streams (e.g., ticket sales, souvenir/ad book, live/silent auctions, sponsorship, underwriting, raffles, etc.) including Celebrity Golf Classic and other fundraising events. As established, works with board members and /or volunteer groups on event design and execution. Develops a project management timeline to outline all steps necessary to execute the event successfully and the designated responsible party for each step.
  • Corporate and Business Engagement: Implements strategies for engaging local businesses and corporations in support of Volunteers of America Southwest's fundraising efforts. Implements strategies for building relationships with and fundraising from service and community organizations.
  • Communication and Marketing: Helps coordinate the organization's marketing, messaging and communications for print and web-based materials. Assists in crafting the overall and specific messaging and marketing strategies for the organization.
  • Special Projects: Participants in special projects, works as a member of interdepartmental teams to ensure the effective operation of the organization. Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills.
