Job Opportunity:

Under direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Resource Specialist is responsible for effectively addressing the housing needs of veteran families by connecting them with appropriate resources. Services provided by the Resource Specialist focus on ensuring SSVF clients have access to VA and community based resources by developing and maintaining partnerships with providers, continuously assessing the needs of veterans and their families, educating clients on community and VA resources, and coordinating services with partners.


Develop relationships with clients that are conducive to promoting confidence, independence, and self-reliance.

Identify current public and VA assistance enrollment and discuss additional benefit resources.

Maintain case record and collaborate with case management staff to ensure veteran families obtain the needed support services to maintain or obtain permanent housing.

Assist clients in identifying, applying for, and obtaining VA and public benefits.

Provide Supported Employment including but not limited to employment counseling, job couching, job matching, vocational assessment and follow-along services.

Provide life skills training classes and workshops.

Develop and maintain knowledge of community resources including but not limited to veteran friendly employment agencies, vocational training programs, and local employment agencies.

Develop and maintain resource guide and benefits guide.

Identify, contact, and follow through with potential housing resources and leads.

Establish new linkages with real estate brokers and landlords.

Advocate and refer clients to public housing, realtors, landlords, and community-based agencies to ensure that clients obtain permanent housing.

Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with community service providers.

Meet regularly with SSVF team to coordinate services and ensure continuum of care.

Work closely with SSVF team to identify needs of clients.

Monitor referrals to ensure that clients are actively seeking and following through with the process of obtaining housing and other resources.

Assist with planning program events and activities that inform veterans and community providers about the SSVF program.

Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Other tasks as assigned.


Minimum requirement of a Bachelor's Degree in social work or related discipline. Minimum of one-year experience as a resource specialist or equivalent position in San Diego County. Must be able to successfully pass fingerprint and criminal investigation screening. Must have valid driver's license and meet insurance guidelines established by the Corporation. CPR/First Aide Certified is preferred. Ability to have a TB test and health screening. Knowledge of program criteria and community resources required. Demonstrated ability to apply independent judgment in critical situations involving veterans and their families.

Must have ability to read, write and speak in English. Bilingual in Spanish helpful.

Must be proficient with computer systems and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Must have demonstrated ability to understand and articulate best practices around housing services for at-risk individuals and families.

Must have demonstrated ability to build rapport and gain trust with diverse individuals.

Must have working knowledge of community resources in San Diego County.

Must have general knowledge of VA benefits and capacity to learn VA system.

Must have demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships with community providers.
